Forty-one-year-old actress Eva Mendes is currently under fire for her comments about marriage and divorce, but some support her position, according to an opinion piece on Time.
In a recent interview with the new mother, Mendes reportedly said, “No, no, no! You can’t do sweatpants! Ladies, number one cause of divorce in America? Sweatpants! No, can’t do that!”
While there has been an understandably large backlash against Mendes’ statement centering around unrealistic expectations of women, Time contributor Brian Moylan support the actress’s statement.
He claims that it is the lack of effort, not the sweatpants, that may lead to the dissolution of a long-term relationship. He goes on to say that, while familiarity is often a perk of these relationships, sometimes, when one partner stops working on their relationship, the other may feel taken for granted. This ‘lack of trying’ could be as simple as not ever working to look good for their partner, or not working on their sex life, or not treating their partner as a valued member of the relationship.
