The North Carolina Supreme Court has issued a public reprimand against Durham district court Judge James Hill on Friday, November 6 over his actions during a contentious child custody hearing over which he presided in 2014. The reprimand specifically addresses his wording when he told the parents involved in the case that they were “acting like idiots.”

Hill, who has served as a Durham judge since 2002, was given a public scolding for expressing inappropriate comments, misusing his contempt powers, and “exhibiting a failure to remain patient, dignified, and courteous, to the parties appearing before him” during the court proceedings.
